Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala have both been nominated for the 2023 Ballon d’Or awards in the men and women categories respectively.

The list, published by France Football Magazine, includes both players as well as 29 other players in the men’s and women’s categories.

It was a historic day for Nigeria as Osimhen restored the Super Eagles’ glory from 1999, and Oshoala continued to make history as the best African player after becoming the first female to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or in 2022, placing 16th out of the 30 players who were shortlisted.

The Serie A championship won by Napoli last season under Osimhen was the team’s first in 33 years. The Super Eagles striker also created a milestone by becoming the league’s top goalscorer with 25 goals, becoming the first African footballer to do so.

The 24-year-old striker also helped his nation qualify for AFCON 2024, and he has scored the most goals overall in the competition.

After Finidi George (1995), Austin Jay-Jay Okocha (1995), Daniel Amokachi (1995), Nwankwo Kanu (1996, 1999), Victor Ikpeba (1997), Sunday Oliseh (1998), and Asisat Oshoala(2022, 2023), the Napoli forward becomes the 7th Nigerian male footballer and 8th Nigerian player to receive a Ballon D’Or nomination.

Oshoala, a five-time winner of the award for best African footballer, made history by being the first African to score in three Women’s World Cups.

The 28-year-old was instrumental as Barcelona retained their domestic title and won the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

At the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, 5-time record African Player of the Year award winner Oshoala made history as the first Nigerian and first female African player to score at three different editions of the FIFA World Cup. She has now scored 31 goals and won the Women’s African Cup of nations three times with the Super Falcons.

Last season, she played in 28 games and scored 21 league goals.

For the second year in a row, the 28-year-old is the sole female delegate from Africa.

Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappe are among the other notable nominees in the men’s category.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony will take place at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on October 30. The winners of the Ballon d’Or 2023 will be announced on this day.
