REMA WINS FIRST AFROBEATS AWARD AT THE 2023 MTV VMAs

The Mavins artiste beat Wizkid, Davido, Burnaboy to win first-ever Best Afrobeats “Calm Down,” a duet between Rema and Selena Gomez, made history by taking up the coveted Best Afrobeats trophy at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

The event, which featured a star-studded lineup, was held on Tuesday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, to honor the best musical artists who have performed on stages around the world. Rema and Selena Gomez’s ‘Calm Down’ had already made waves, receiving three nominations for Best Collaboration, Song of the Year, and Best Afrobeats.

However, it was in the Best Afrobeats category that this incredible team made history as the inaugural winners of this newly founded category.


Rema’s ‘Calm Down,’ along with Burna Boy’s ‘It’s Plenty,’ was nominated. ‘Unavailable,’ by Davido and Musa Key; ‘Rush,’ by Ayra Starr; ‘People,’ by Libianca; ‘2 Sugar,’ by Wizkid and Ayra Starr; and ‘Bandana,’ by Fireboy DML.
The song ‘Calm Down,’ which debuted on August 25, 2022, drew attention for its unique combination of Afrobeats and pop components.

The song’s remix was so popular that it became the first song to ever hold a top spot on the Billboard US Afrobeats Songs chart for a whole year.
As the first No. 1 Hit on The Official MENA Chart, it also earned the coveted title.
Recall our website noted that “Calm Down” had received one billion streams on the international online streaming service Spotify few days ago.
The achievement was revealed in a statement on Sunday by Victor Okpala, Spotify’s Artiste and Label Partnerships Manager for West Africa.

In his speech, Rema thanked his fans, his team, Selena Gomez, and Nigerian music icons 2BabaDon JazzyD’BanjD’PrinceRuntownTimayaWizkidBurna Boy, and Davido for their pioneering work in Afrobeats and also thanked the new generation for their efforts in continuing the trend to take Afrobeats to greater heights.

First released on February 11, 2022, “Calm Down” is the second single from Rema’s debut studio album, “Rave & Roses.”
